About Me

On September 1, 2010 my sweet little muppethead, KiraDog, died. She was diagnosed with Cushings disease in November 2009 and it finally gave way to heart disease and liver failure. I knew I needed another dog to fill the void in my heart and my home so I worked with Furbaby Rescue (where Kira came from) and was gently encouraged to meet a particular dog in need of a forever home. On September 10, 2010 I adopted Conor. . . . This is his story.

About Me (and really, when you think about it, it IS all about ME):

Conor: Gender: Masculine; Usage: Irish, English, Irish Mythology; Pronounced: KAHN-…ôr (English): Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Conchobhar which means "dog lover" or "wolf lover" also "lover of hounds". It has been in use in Ireland for centuries and was the name of several Irish kings.

Hi everyone!

My name is Conor. Well, it used to be Bumper but my mom thought it was as silly name (and in a way, so did I) for a grown-up puppy so she re-named me Conor. Conor, now that's a good strong manly-man Irish name, don't you think? I'm quite proud of it myself :-)

Anyway, I'm a "Liver" coloured Shih Tzu and I was about 2 1/2 years old when I was adopted (Mom says my Birthday is July 4, 2008! She's not 100% sure of the right date, but that's the day she picked). I have allergies and have to be careful (pfft!) about what I eat - no wheat, grains, or beef allowed. I'm a rambunctious guy who always seems to find trouble, er...toys, to play with. I like watching the world around me from my perch in the kitchen bay window and love my mom to bits - and even though he didn't really like me much, I also miss SirWillyCat a little.

Characters in my life:

  • Aunt Jo and Uncle Dale: Mom and Aunt Jo have been friends for almost 30 years, since high school. Aunt Jo is a pet person and raised both her kids to love animals. Uncle Dale, having grown up on a farm, had to be converted a little bit.
  • Aunt Diane: Mom's friend and (retired) co-worker. Aunt Diane lives a few doors away from us and we sometimes go to her place for a visit.
  • Miss Eleni: Founder of Furbaby Rescue
  • Miss Nicole: A Furbaby adopter who has two puppers to call her own. She lives in a different town, but close enough to mom they could visit (if their schedules ever let them!) Miss Nicole loves hearing my stories :-)
  • Miss Vanja: Met mom through Furbaby Rescue. They haven't met in person 'cause she lives far away.
  • VetLady: Dr. I. Elizabeth Borgmann, founder of the Whatcom Road Veterinary Clinic
  • Willy: (aka SirWillyCat): Adopted January 7, 1994. Willy died on January 24, 2011. He was 17 1/2 years old.

On the move again!

So it's been a crazy 20 months!

We moved into this really great basement suite, private (gravel) fenced in yard, 4 blocks from a major city park in February 2015.  The first set of neighbours upstairs were not very friendly and didn't like me much.  Could be because they had to move 'cause they snuck in an extra puppy at Christmas and the new puppy and their older dog didn't get along.  They blamed me for barking a lot but it was actually their dogs who started it.  The landlord caught them lying about me when he came around and listened to their dogs going at and me only chiming in once in a while.  They moved in April.

The next lady and her son were really cool and I loved (simply LOVED) their corgi, Gin-Ji.  Mom really liked the lady too, she was so nice and fun to have as a neighbour.  Alas, the lady and the landlord didn't quite see eye-to-eye and then her sons moved in with their girlfriends so it was pretty cramped for them.  She moved away and took Gin-Ji with her.  I miss Gin-Ji and mom misses the lady :-(

Then a new lady moved in in January 2016 with her really old dog, Oreo.  Oreo was half-blind and arthritic (mom says that means he can't walk very well, poor poor guy :-( ) but the lady was super cool!  Then something really bad happened to the lady and she died.  Mom says it upsets her still because she found her.  Mom let Oreo stay with us for few days until a family member could take him.  Oreo was ok, though we really didn't do much together.

Finally, the landlord let a friend move in, in April, and he turned out to be an angry alcoholic.  Mom says that means he drinks bad stuff and gets mean.  He yells a lot and gets violent; finally mom had enough and in August she yelled back.  He raged on the shared parking lot and wanted to hurt my mom but before I could intervene, mom went chest-to-chest with his drunk self and backed his ass right into his truck.  Mom called the police and the landlord but was still not happy with the outcome.  So she thought about looking for a new place to live.

Then the landlords decided they'd had enough of being landlords and are making "lipstick renovations" hoping to sell the house.  Mom says there is too much uncertainty so she decided enough was enough and started looking for a place for us to live.

This week she found one.  It's not perfect, though.  No fenced in yard for me to play in, because the property isn't landscaped yet.  It's a brand-new house just built this year and the apartment is "purpose built" so it's not an add-on/renovation but part of the original house design.  It costs a wee bit more (only $150 more than now) but all utilities included, it's brand new, new appliances, etc. and mom will be the first ever tenant in the suite.  She wants me to make sure everyone knows it has NINE FOOT CEILINGS!!!!  2 bedrooms, tiny (Tiny!!) living room, kitchen, washer/dryer, soaker tub, walk in closet...and NINE FOOT CEILINGS!!!!!  And the next very best part of it all?  Only 2.1 km to work (about 1.3 miles).  Mom said she can walk to work.  I don't like this part.  Mom always takes ME walking with her, now she wants to go by herself?  I don't think she's ready for that yet!

The landlord said mom has to go to the house on Wednesday to sign paperwork.  I get to meet the new landlord then.  To make sure I make a Very Good Impression, mom took me to the ManSpa (groomer) today for a mani-pedi, bath, and new 'do.

Mom says the owners live in the main part of the home and are older (mid-50's-early 60's) so they're quieter.  The house is also far away from the raceway and trains so mom is hoping it will be quieter (especially on weekends) for her, too.

I will try to let everyone know how it goes!

Oh, I'm doing great, by the way - just had my annual physical and VetLady says I'm healthy (then why on Earth did she give me needles???) although I have a few 'age warts' forming which means this ride is about half over.  Mom got teary-eyed 'cause she loves me so much she never wants to think about it but I reminded her I need to take care of Kira and SirWillyCat when I go so she should be happy for that!  Anyway, that's at least 8 years away so we won't think about it at all!!

We're on the move! Part 2 :-)

As I told you earlier, Mom sold the house and it looks like the deal will go through without a hitch.  We have to move out by February 23.  Mom hasn't had to look for a place to live for a long, long time so she was a little worried about finding a place she can afford and still save up enough money to buy a new house in about 2 years.

She found the perfect place!  AND, it was the first (and only) place she looked at.  My bestest walking walking buddy, Lorraine, found it for Mom and went with her to view the place.  It's a basement suite, kinda small compared to what we're used to but if Mom is careful, she ought to be able to get our stuff in and there's a spare room she can use for storage.  She said she'll have to pack the room like Tetris.  I dunno what that means but she says it with a rueful smile.  Mom took me there last weekend to see the place.  I kinda like it!  Small, but really close to at least two parks I can play in, and lots of uphill walking (my butt is gonna look AWESOME hiking uphill all the time!)

So now Mom is in panic-mode, not ready for the move, thinks she has time but really doesn't.  I'm trying to motivate her by offering toys as incentive.  I would dangle chicken treats in front of her to get her moving but I eated them all :-(

What's wrong with these pictures?

Mom says I hog the bed.

I'm thinking "Um.  No."

Note the disparity between his blankey and my pulled back covers area!!  He's 24 freakin' pounds and he takes MORE than half the freakin' bed!

We're on the move!!!!!!!

MOM SOLD THE HOUSE!!!!!  At least, she accepted an offer now we wait to see if the buyers follow through with their side of the deal by December 24.

If they do, this means we're moving but we don't know where yet.  Mom said she's not going to buy a new home for a while so we're going to rent for a year or so.  She says she wants to be able to pack up and leave anytime she wants.  Y'see, she's been trying to sell the house for over two years, listing then re-listing, then taking it off the market, then listing again to re-set the clock so it didn't look like it's been for sale for so long.

Mom says she lost all her equity and then some; had to sell for much less than she paid over 6 years ago (I was just wee little puppy, all of 3 months old but living in another country and not with my adopted mom yet) so she need to "recover" from the loss first.

But despite all that, she's glad she's dumped this "monstrosity of a house that is nickel and diming her into poverty."  I don't totally understand that, but I do know even though she's upset she lost a lot of money, she is glad to get rid of this house and glad to get out of a Strata.

Mom says I'm allowed to pee on her leg if she ever thinks about buying in a Strata ever again!  That made me giggle :-)

In other news, Mom forgot all about taking me to see Santa this year.  By the time she remembered it was too late and Santa already went back to the North Pole to supervise the elves.  Then she made Auntie Jo invite her to Comox.  What does that mean?  Well, Auntie Jo sometimes assumes Mom knows what she means and so Mom now makes Auntie Jo "expressly state what she wants and stop hiding behind subterfuge or skirting around the bush" (maybe she's just looking for a good place to pee?)  Anyway, they were on the 'phone (shocking!) and Mom said Auntie Jo was having a quiet Christmas and asked what Mom was doing, Mom said "I dunno what I'm doing for Christmas, go to the movies with Auntie Diane again, I guess."  Next day Auntie Jo called again and asked what Mom was doing for Christmas, Mom said "Still no plans other than the movies, I guess."  Anyway, to make a long story short, this went back and forth for at least 3 conversations when finally Mom MADE Auntie Jo say the magic words, or at least as close as Auntie Jo was willing to say them "Well?  Are you coming over here or not???"

Guess where I'm spending Christmas this year?  Yup, going to Comox!  Mom says her boss is pretty cool on Christmas Eve Day and lets everyone go home early so we're going to take the ferry over that evening.  I can't wait, I'm so excited!!!!

Oh I must be gettin' old :-(

Couldn't meet mom coming home after work at the door to the garage as I always do.  Seems my adventure and excitement yesterday has made my tummy a wee bit troubled and my legs are sore and stiff.

I met mom at the top of the stairs and whimpered a little bit.  She made me get up and walk a few steps to see what was wrong and noticed I was limping a bit.  Mom massaged my front legs and then I could hop down the stairs to go out for a potty.

I might milk this for all it's worth if it means I get carried everywhere and get massages!!!

Going to the park!

Going to the river valley park today!!  OhboyOhboyOhboy  I love me da river valley park - gonna romp and play and find Trouble and trip da mudder and snack and flop in da river when we're done - pictures and stories to follow :-)

Edit 3 hours later:

Three guesses who forgot her camera at home?  Three more guesses who let the battery die on her 'phone so couldn't even use that camera?

Now guess who chased horses and darn near collapsed with heat stroke and freaked mom out so bad she poured cold water in my mouth and carried me down to the river to cool me off?  Now guess who's flopped down in the middle of the living room floor pretending to be asleep?

But other than the end-of-the-hike drama, it was a great day!  Mom used her footstep counter thingy on her iPod and supposedly we went 6187 steps, went 4.6 km's over 1 hr. 37 minutes *includes breaks.

I was Right!

Mom DID take a few extra days off and guess what?  We're going on VACATION!!!

Mom said I kinda stink (my eau de pooch is riveting, not revolting!) and I still have tree bits stuck in my coat from our hike last weekend.  So I guessed correctly I'm going to the ManSpa tomorrow.  Mom said she's going to do some errands while I'm getting my mani-pedi, bath and a hair-cut.  Mom said she's going to get her picture taken for her passport application and return some Capri pants to the store (looked great on the hanger, not so great on mom's fat butt).  Then we're gonna pack!

Then on Wednesday morning we're going to drop off mom's passport renewal then we're going on the BIG ferry boat to Comox to see Jo, Dale, Anthony, Katie and Edo.  Oh boy, I can't wait!!  Auntie Jo sneaks me treats when mom isn't looking, and not those healthy gluten/grain-free things I get at home, but duck leather, milk bones, and tons of other fattening treats that are Not Good for me...Love it!  Mom got mad last time and wagged her finger in Auntie Jo's general direction but she just smirked and said "what ever you say!"  Mom didn't believe her.  Neither did I.  Finally, I get to muscle Edo off the ottoman in front of Auntie Jo and snuggle against her leg; last time it made mom jealous.  Well, not really, but *I* like to think it did.

I'll tell you all about our adventure when I get back!

Aaaaand we're back!!

Today was such a gloriously beautiful day mom couldn't hold back any longer and off we went to....

You guessed it!  The river park!!

Goose on a "date" with her mate not far behind.

YAY!!  I love the river park :-)  Mom said she has to build up her cardio and trekking skills if she wants to go on her super-secret, extra-special, once-in-a-lifetime trek next spring.

She plugged in her new iPod senor thingy and it told her we hiked for 48 minutes, went 3.4 km's, and made 5693 steps.  Mine are doubled, though, 'cause I have 4 feet and mom only has 2.  Now that I think about it, mine should be tripled 'cause I have to dart side to side, sniff, pee, poop, sniff some more, stop and greet everyone we pass, stop for panting, chase kids on bikes, chase horses out for a stroll, check my pee-mail, sniff other puppers butts, etc. so I do MUCH more walking than mom and her single-file, non-butt sniffing pace.

Mom said she should be able to shave at least 20 minutes off her time if that's the case 'cause I delay her pace with all my "antics", as she calls 'em.

So we're back to our weekend routine of going to the river park.  A little late this year; last year we started mid-March.  But that's OK.  I hope the weather is amazing next week 'cause mom said she has four days off work and then winked - maybe she took some extra days off again??  OhBoyOhBoyOhBoy!!!

First nice day in weeks so here I am all patiently waiting fer her Royal Self to get my leash and take me for a LET'S GO!!!!

Still lovin' life, chasing trouble, and lovin' me mum!!

Mini Vacation and a Ferry ride!

Mom and I went to see Aunt Jo and Uncle Dale, along with cousins Anthony (human, 19 y/o), Katie (dog, 11 y/o), and Edo (cat, 8 y/o).  I've never met them before but Mom say she's known them for oodles of years, longer than I've been alive!!

We took the Big Ferry Boat over.  Now, I've been on the Ferry before and I liked it, but this time there was something different (I guess) and I didn't like at as much.  It was too loud, too busy with cars and people, and too stinky with all the fumes.  When the ferry started moving Mom tried to get me out of the car to walk and I said 'oh hell no!' and stayed put.

Nope, I'm fine right here on my car blankey!

Not sure why he was so scared, but when I went to walk him to the Pet Room, he refused to leave the car, trembling, etc.  Same on the way home.  Good thing he peed and pooped at the terminal before boarding!  So I filled his water bowl, left some treats, and away I went.

Jo and Dale recently moved to Comox over on Vancouver Island when Dale's job moved him out of Winnipeg.  I hear Winnipeg is crazy cold over the longer-than-here winters.  In fact, Aunt Jo barely stopped talking about how cold and long the winters are in Winnipeg.  She was only in Winnipeg for 4 years and we were visiting for 4 days.  Guess how those two numbers matched up?

That's OK, I won't complain about Aunt Jo going on (and on and on and on) about how awful Winnipeg was 'cause she fed me tiny bits of bones (Katie got the HUGE bits, I only got miniscule, barely visible crumbs).  Then when we weren't allowed bones any more, we got duck leather (basically the same as dried chicken strips, but made with duck).  Katie got the HUGE pieces, sometimes two pieces!  Whereas Yours Truly only got a teeniest microscopic pieces.

Just doesn't seem fair, now does it?

Except Mom reminds me KatieGirl is 110 lbs. of German Sheppard/Rottweiler?/something HUGE? cross.  Yet she is the gentlest giant you could ever meet.  Katie loves belly rubs, giving and getting kisses, and wrap-around hugs.  I gave her plenty of all three 'cause I missed her, too.
I'm "little" by comparison AND have food allergies.

So I sat with Aunt Jo the whole time and she pet me with her feet as I curled up on her ottoman...giving mom the stink-eye where she sat way on the other side of the couch.

Mom and Aunt Jo left me behind with Dale and Anthony a few times.  Us guys did Manly-Man chores and stuff while the women-folk were doing whatever secrecy women do when off having a coven of some kind.  Mom says the result of them taking off might become known next month; has something to do with why mom is selling our house back home...I think.  Ooo look, treats!@!!!  Gotta go :-)

Oh, almost forgot:  Edo the cat hates me.  I tried to be friends with him, but nope, hated me with a passion.  *sigh* I tried.
