About Me

On September 1, 2010 my sweet little muppethead, KiraDog, died. She was diagnosed with Cushings disease in November 2009 and it finally gave way to heart disease and liver failure. I knew I needed another dog to fill the void in my heart and my home so I worked with Furbaby Rescue (where Kira came from) and was gently encouraged to meet a particular dog in need of a forever home. On September 10, 2010 I adopted Conor. . . . This is his story.

About Me (and really, when you think about it, it IS all about ME):

Conor: Gender: Masculine; Usage: Irish, English, Irish Mythology; Pronounced: KAHN-…ôr (English): Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Conchobhar which means "dog lover" or "wolf lover" also "lover of hounds". It has been in use in Ireland for centuries and was the name of several Irish kings.

Hi everyone!

My name is Conor. Well, it used to be Bumper but my mom thought it was as silly name (and in a way, so did I) for a grown-up puppy so she re-named me Conor. Conor, now that's a good strong manly-man Irish name, don't you think? I'm quite proud of it myself :-)

Anyway, I'm a "Liver" coloured Shih Tzu and I was about 2 1/2 years old when I was adopted (Mom says my Birthday is July 4, 2008! She's not 100% sure of the right date, but that's the day she picked). I have allergies and have to be careful (pfft!) about what I eat - no wheat, grains, or beef allowed. I'm a rambunctious guy who always seems to find trouble, er...toys, to play with. I like watching the world around me from my perch in the kitchen bay window and love my mom to bits - and even though he didn't really like me much, I also miss SirWillyCat a little.

Characters in my life:

  • Aunt Jo and Uncle Dale: Mom and Aunt Jo have been friends for almost 30 years, since high school. Aunt Jo is a pet person and raised both her kids to love animals. Uncle Dale, having grown up on a farm, had to be converted a little bit.
  • Aunt Diane: Mom's friend and (retired) co-worker. Aunt Diane lives a few doors away from us and we sometimes go to her place for a visit.
  • Miss Eleni: Founder of Furbaby Rescue
  • Miss Nicole: A Furbaby adopter who has two puppers to call her own. She lives in a different town, but close enough to mom they could visit (if their schedules ever let them!) Miss Nicole loves hearing my stories :-)
  • Miss Vanja: Met mom through Furbaby Rescue. They haven't met in person 'cause she lives far away.
  • VetLady: Dr. I. Elizabeth Borgmann, founder of the Whatcom Road Veterinary Clinic
  • Willy: (aka SirWillyCat): Adopted January 7, 1994. Willy died on January 24, 2011. He was 17 1/2 years old.

Christmas Turkey is the best!

Me and mom went to Aunt Diane's for Christmas.  We got there just after 2 p.m. and I was a little scared because there were so many people there!  Aunt Diane's 2 adult sons and their girlfriends were there, one with her young daughter; Christmas music playing in between a basketball game, and the smells, oooooooo the smells.....I was in Heaven!

Mom made me wear a jingle bell collar; said it was for Christmas but I heard her tell the people it was so she could track me in the house.  Anyway, mom kept the leash on me just in case I got aggressive, too nosy, or scared.  After everyone introduced themselves to me, mom figured I'd be OK so she took the leash off.

Let's just say, I was a Very Good Boy!  I know, 'cause everyone told me so :-)  Oh, and I LOVE turkey!!!!

Aunt Diane took out a puppy-sized plate and put mashed potato, carrots, peas, TURKEY!!, some ham, and then gravy - then she let me eat near the dinner table with everyone else.  I felt so special that I barely whimpered for more.  Just barely.  Then when everyone was done, I got to help clean the plates before they went into the dishwasher.  OH!  Mom wants to make sure I tell you that I only tried to go into the kitchen while the food was being prepared twice.  Both times I was 'caught' and told to wait in the living room.  Aunt Diane's son, Scott, played Santa and I curled up next to mom while everyone opened their pressies.  Mom said it was OK if I wanted to play with the wrapping paper for a few minutes, but I didn't.  Mom then tied a curly ribbon cluster around my jingle bell collar.

As soon as Aunt Diane downloads the pictures, I'll post 'em!

Today we went back for leftovers.  MMMMmmmm, more turkey!  Then (and this is the Best Part) Aunt Diane gave mom a whole turkey leg to pick from!  Mom says I get a little taste with my kibble for a few more days, then that's it.  No more until next year.  Let me say that again, I have to wait a WHOLE YEAR to have more turkey!  I don't think I could stand it.

I almost forgot to tell you about MY pressie!  Mom got me a stuffed duck.  She said it's because my kibble is potato and duck and she couldn't find any stuffed potatoes.  She also got me treats but I wasn't allowed to have any because she knew I would get treats and Aunt Diane's.

When I asked Diane if Conor could come over, she hesitated so I immediately said I would leave him at home.  Now, Diane is quite taken with Conor so she relented/backtracked and said we could give it a try.  You see, I've never brought Conor along to a gathering with a lot of people, all the noise and excitement, etc. so this was a test.  Diane lives a few doors down from me so if it didn't work out, it's only a short trip back to drop him off.  I was thoroughly impressed with his behaviour!  He was a little nervous at first, trembling, etc. and was confused because whenever we go there, there's maybe one or two others, if that.  This was a noisy crowd by comparison.  He sat by my feet for a few minutes then hopped up on the couch beside me, watching all the frenzy curiously.  He got a little adventurous and checked out all the presents under the tree but only gave them a sniff before coming back to me.  After dinner he sat patiently at the kitchen entrance waiting for a treat.  I had to laugh - at one point he was sitting there, with his jingle bell collar and ribbon tie, then he cocked his head to the side watching us clean up.  I swear he looked just like the Christmas card with the yellow lab/golden puppy I always see this time of year.  Absolutely adorable!  Everyone complimented him and told him how good he was.  He was Very well behaved and for that I am thankful.  I now know I can pretty much take him anywhere and be confident he'll be OK.

Diane took all the pictures so it might be a few days before I get them emailed to me, so please check back!  I can't wait to show off how cute Conor looked!!!  Today while we were there Conor jumped into my lap, curled up against my arm, put his head down and napped.  Diane took a picture I hope like crazy it turned out!  I think it will show just how attached we've become.

One more sleep!

TornadoConor:  OH BOY! OH BOY!  OH BOY! OH BOY!  OH BOY! OH BOY! *TripStumble/Recover* OH BOY! OH BOY!  OH BOY! OH BOY!  OH BOY! OH BOY!

There a present under da tree just for MEEEEEEeeeeeee!  I know it's for me, I kin sniff it and it smells like doggy stuff!  Mom says I can't open it it until tomorrow morning so just one more sleep 'til I get my pressie!

Mom said we're going to visit Aunt Diane tomorrow then mom is going to see Miss Sherry.  I can't visit with Miss Sherry 'cause they have a doggy that might not like me and it's not fair to Miss Lily to have an interloper in her house.  Mom says after opening my pressie then visiting with Aunt Diane I might be too tired to go out again anyway.  I hope to have a belly full of turkey and mashed potato so I can nap while mom goes a-visitin'.

I really like this Christmas thing!  The house is all decorated, the tree is big and bright with lights, all the other houses are lit up when we go for our "Let's Go", turkey dinner and mashed potato in with my kibble, and there's a pressie for me under the tree.

Mom told me to think for a moment of all the doggies that don't have a person to love them or a warm, dry home and extra turkey in their kibble.  I was never really homeless; I had two homes before this one, but THIS is my Forever Home!  (Unless the turkey runs out, then it's a case of, "hey mom!  I'm soooo out of here!")

Merry Christmas to Miss Nicole, Miss Eleni, Miss Vanja (and her gaggle of puppers!), Aunt Diane, Miss Lorraine, Aunt Josephine, Uncle Dale...Aw heck, Merry Christmas to EVERYone!!!!!  Kisses/licks/four paws up!

I'm a cleaned-up puppers!

I was so confused today - mom came home in the middle of the day, interrupted my nap just to tell me I was having a bath.  That was so weird, to have her come home just to give me a bath.  Then it dawned on me, today is Spa Day!  (Hey, boys can go to the Spa too, you know)

So off we went.  The place looked kind of familiar, I know I've been down this road before many times (the place is on our walking route) but this time I got to go inside.  WELL!!  Let me tell you, I met 3 or 4 other dogs there and thought for sure this must be a heavenly place if they were all there, too!  The difference is they all looked so much better than me, what with their snooty puffery smelling coats and not-a-hair-out-of-place grooming.

I felt frumpy.  But that's OK, mom assured me soon I would be greeting other dogs with my very own snooty smelling coat and perfect coiffed hair.

So......how'd I turn out?

Dammit, I'm not liking the flashy thing, mom!

Knock it off...but let me strike a pose first, m'kay?

That's it.  I'm done.  Not looking no matter how many times you call out my name!
See the rust-coloured patch down by my tail?  I have a whole streak that colour running down my back!  Mom says it's makes me extra-special 'cause I'm not completely beige; she says it gives me "character".  Not sure what 'character' is, I'd rather have treats but if it makes mom smile, then it's OK...I guess.

Speaking of making mom happy, she says I'm all "snorgley" now.  I wasn't sure what that word meant either, but based on what happened next, I'll take it gladly!!!  See, mom took one look at me and squealed that I'm all "snorgley" now, then she picked me up and buried her face right into my neck making nom nom sounds while cuddling me.  I liked it!  :-)  She says my fur is all soft, cuddly, and smells good too.

Still not liking the flashy thing, though...

Hey, I've been busy!

Mom reminded me tonight I need to write my blog.  She makes it sound like fun, but sometimes it feels like a chore.  Kinda like writing out Christmas cards, right mom?  RIGHT?  (In case you're wondering, mom hasn't even started her Christmas cards yet!  Only 6 days to go and they certainly won't make it in time, but she keeps putting it off anyway.  I've tried to tell her to get on it, but she keeps finding other chores to so instead.  I'm not even going to bother telling you the disaster that buying presents has become.  Mom said she's giving up completely on that front).  I gots a card from Buddy and Penny, though!  Hey mom, if even Buddy and Penny can send me a card, surely you can write a few to your family and friends, you know!

I've been busy helping mom decorate the house with tons and tons of lights for Christmas.  The outdoor lights are up and set on a timer, all the windows on the main level are trimmed with lights; the front window has garland and swag lights hanging.  A few days ago we were out for our evening stroll when a neighbour stopped mom to say I did a great job hanging all the lights - he said he likes looking out his window and seeing my house all lit up.  Of the four "streets" in our complex, there's really only one where all the neighbours go all out.  On our side us and the across-the-street neighbours are really the only ones who've decorated with any gusto.  The moisy, obnoxious neighbours next door have one string of icicle lights along the eaves over the garage door.  Still better than nothing I s'pose.

OH!  Mom wants me to make sure to tell everyone I haven't touched the tree At All!  It's not even blocked off or anything :-)

Mom made me an appointment with the groomer for this coming Wednesday.  She said she's going to come home at lunch to pick me up then will get me back after work.  I told mom I would try my hardest to be a Very Good Boy while there.  Mom's given me enough baths that she knows I'm very good.  She made sure that they have anti-allergy shampoo and while they still use a blow dryer, they have a cool air dryer and seeing as how I'm going to be there for a few hours, I should be able to air dry too.

Tonight I was mucking around after our "Let's go!" and mom took some early "before" pics, mostly to show Miss Eleni how much my hair has grown back!  I'm starting to get a few matts down by my butt, though.  Mom brushes me a lot, but it's to a point where she can't keep up.  That, and the hair hanging down my face Drives Me Nuts!

That's me waiting for mom to put down the flashy thing so I can jump up on my chair.
Got up on my chair and mom is still flashing the camera at me!

My junk is rotten!

Mom says my favourite telephone pole gave me The Clap.

Now, if you've been following my story you'll know I have a quirk in that I don't like peeing all that much.  I can 'hold it' almost 18 hours!  It freaks mom out and she makes me go in the morning, although sometimes I still won't on our mini-walk so she lets me be.  I 'go' when mom comes home from work and again on our "Let's Go!" later in the evening, first stop is my favourite telephone pole.

Well, I guess that all caught up with me.

I have a bladder infection.

Mom noticed on Wednesday I wasn't as perky as I normally am (and let me tell you, I am ALL CAPS PERKY!!!) so she kept her eye on me.  Then on Thursday morning I shuddered at the idea of peeing.  Mom was concerned, but put out pee pads and put the belly band on me.  When she got home from work and took off the belly band, there was a small circle of clear blood and puss where my junk ends.

Well!!  What a flurry of action and activity that caused!  Next thing you know, I'm being rushed to a local vet for an urgent appointment.  $65 later and a bottle of pills in hand, mom finally started breathing normally.

The pills are HUGE and I found half of one in my wiener treat.  Nice try, mom!  Oooo, but I like how you made my pumpkin treat later on!  A tablespoon of boiling water, stirred several times (for some strange reason) then a dollop of pumpkin with a tiny sprinkle of sugar on top (one mini-pinch) - Mmmmm, warm pumpkin 'soup'

This morning I had warm pumpkin soup again - I'm a lucky dog!  AND when mom got home from work tonight she said I was already starting to be my ol' PERKY self :-)  I have to admit, I AM feeling better, and my junk doesn't hurt as much when I pee.

Must be that warm pumpkin soup that made me feel better, and not those huge stupid, awful tasting pills...
