About Me

On September 1, 2010 my sweet little muppethead, KiraDog, died. She was diagnosed with Cushings disease in November 2009 and it finally gave way to heart disease and liver failure. I knew I needed another dog to fill the void in my heart and my home so I worked with Furbaby Rescue (where Kira came from) and was gently encouraged to meet a particular dog in need of a forever home. On September 10, 2010 I adopted Conor. . . . This is his story.

About Me (and really, when you think about it, it IS all about ME):

Conor: Gender: Masculine; Usage: Irish, English, Irish Mythology; Pronounced: KAHN-…ôr (English): Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Conchobhar which means "dog lover" or "wolf lover" also "lover of hounds". It has been in use in Ireland for centuries and was the name of several Irish kings.

Hi everyone!

My name is Conor. Well, it used to be Bumper but my mom thought it was as silly name (and in a way, so did I) for a grown-up puppy so she re-named me Conor. Conor, now that's a good strong manly-man Irish name, don't you think? I'm quite proud of it myself :-)

Anyway, I'm a "Liver" coloured Shih Tzu and I was about 2 1/2 years old when I was adopted (Mom says my Birthday is July 4, 2008! She's not 100% sure of the right date, but that's the day she picked). I have allergies and have to be careful (pfft!) about what I eat - no wheat, grains, or beef allowed. I'm a rambunctious guy who always seems to find trouble, er...toys, to play with. I like watching the world around me from my perch in the kitchen bay window and love my mom to bits - and even though he didn't really like me much, I also miss SirWillyCat a little.

Characters in my life:

  • Aunt Jo and Uncle Dale: Mom and Aunt Jo have been friends for almost 30 years, since high school. Aunt Jo is a pet person and raised both her kids to love animals. Uncle Dale, having grown up on a farm, had to be converted a little bit.
  • Aunt Diane: Mom's friend and (retired) co-worker. Aunt Diane lives a few doors away from us and we sometimes go to her place for a visit.
  • Miss Eleni: Founder of Furbaby Rescue
  • Miss Nicole: A Furbaby adopter who has two puppers to call her own. She lives in a different town, but close enough to mom they could visit (if their schedules ever let them!) Miss Nicole loves hearing my stories :-)
  • Miss Vanja: Met mom through Furbaby Rescue. They haven't met in person 'cause she lives far away.
  • VetLady: Dr. I. Elizabeth Borgmann, founder of the Whatcom Road Veterinary Clinic
  • Willy: (aka SirWillyCat): Adopted January 7, 1994. Willy died on January 24, 2011. He was 17 1/2 years old.

Mom spent the day with Aunt Diane.  i didn't get to go because it was mom's first visit to the rehab place and wanted to make sure it was OK that I can come next time.  Apparently some residents have allergies so I can still visit but can't go inside.  Mom says there's lots of hidey places around the building, ramps and garden's that we can visit in without having to go inside.

Mom took Aunt Diane to get her hair done - Oh boy!  I wonder if she goes to Diggity-Dog, too?  That's my Spa and I love my haircuts :-D  Mom just snickered and said they found a new place called "All About Beauty" and they were able to just walk right in and get her hair fixed up nice.  After almost a month in the hospital mom said Aunt Diane's hair was looking like a birds nest.  TeeHee.  Birds nesting in her hair.  I'd giggle if I saw that - then I'd chase those darn pesky birds away.

Mom did something at the Spa that she's never done before, ever in her life:  She had her eyebrows 'threaded'.  She looks like a girl now!!!  (And because she's not used to it, she says she feels like she has a perpetual surprised look on her face).

So on Day 1 of the Super-Long Weekend, I was left home alone for most of the day while mom and Aunt Diane had a Spa Day.  I hope they tipped Diggity-Dog well so I get awesome service next time I get to go...oh wait, they found a new place *rolls eyes*

World's Longest Weekend!

Mom says we get to spend the World's Longest Weekend together!  Now, I know a few times a year she spends an extra day with me 'cause sometimes on a Monday she sleeps in and doesn't rush off to work.  She says they're called Stat Holiday's.

But she says now she's taken extra holiday's and we get to spend (ready for it?) TWO WHOLE WEEKS together!  I'm so excited!!!!!!  It's supposed to be sunny and warm the whole time so we're going to romp and play in the park, go for TONS of "Let's GO!"'s, and the go to the doggy park so I can play with all my buddies.  Then we're going to have lots of treats, play with toys at home, and then in the evenings we're going to have tons of belly rubs and cuddles.  OH BOY!!  Mom says if I'm extra good, we might even go for a long car ride, maybe even go on the ferry too, to spend time with some friends and family.  I can't wait to meet my new friends and family!

AND, mom says Aunt Diane might come home sooner than we thought so I can visit with her, too!  Mom says I can't play with Aunt Diane 'cause her arms still hurt but I know I can snuggle up with her so that's good enough for me.

On the downside, mom also said I get to participate in something called 'remedial training' too.  Not sure what that is, but it sounds suspiciously like school.  Summer school:  BLEECH!  I don't wanna go to school when it's summer time, mom :-(  Then mom said we have something called 'chores' to do.  That sounds suspiciously like work to me - so long as I get paid, I guess it might be OK.  I'd rather have McDonalds fries, though.  I have nowhere to keep a wallet if I get paid money.

I have to remind mom to take tons of pictures and maybe some video over the next two whole weeks so I can post about our wonderful vacation together.  Keep looking for more posts over the next few weeks!

You know you love your dog when...

...Despite your love of chocolate, when you have a coupon for a free 2L bucket of ice cream, you get vanilla so you can share it with your dog.

...Then you buy gluten-free ice cream cones so you can share the last bite of the ice cream while out on the "Let's Go!"

...Then, while researching the rehab place your friend is going to, you come to a full stop when you read:

Pet policy
We have a cat and bird that live in the residence. We welcome visits from pets, and have a regular dog visitation program. In order to facilitate pet visits, owners must provide current documentation showing all current immunizations.

Then frantically call said friend and squeal with glee knowing Conor can visit his Aunt Diane while she recovers from her accident.

Finally, you know you love your dog when, despite a pounding headache and churning stomach, you still spend the better part of an hour sitting on the floor playing a combination of fetch, chase, and the over-mitt game.

Aunt Diane is in the hospital :-(

Aunt Diane had an accident :-(

She twisted her ankle on a neighbours step and fell.  Mom said she broke her left arm by the shoulder and her right elbow so she has two broken arms. I knew something was up when mom got a call on Thursday evening then she rushed out the door to go to the hospital.  When she came home she told me what happened.

Aunt Diane had surgery on the elbow this morning so mom is going to go see her tonight.  I'm not allowed to go visit at the hospital, but that's OK 'cause I don't much care for those places anyway.

So it looks like Your Truly has to rally the troops and get ready to give some serious lovin' and cuddlin' to Aunt Diane when she comes home!!  I think I'm pretty sure I'm up to the task :-P  Mom wants to find out what kind of therapy dog I can be - I told mom that if Aunt Diane is in bed, I'm positive I can learn very quickly how to cuddle up next to her in bed :-)

The funny part?  Mom has to learn how to cook so Aunt Diane can rest and be hand-fed!  THAT should be funny to see :-)

I'll update as more news comes in.

Happy Birthday to my little ConorMan!

Happy Birthday to me!
I said:  “Happy Birthday To MEEEEEE!
There.  I feel a lot better now.
So today is yesterday was the date mom picked to be my birthday.  Now, mom figures I turned 3 sometime back in the winter but because I was born in the USA she thought it was fitting that July 4 be my birthday.  Kinda like in England where they celebrate the Monarch’s birthday in June, regardless of the real day they were born?
So I’m Three Years old now!  Oy, am I ever getting old :-(
Mom says I still have a lot of puppy in me (I keep telling her I’m a BOY and can’t have puppies in me but she just shakes her head and laughs).  She says that because I’ll wake her up at 2 a.m. to either go potty or to play.  Lately it’s been more to play than potty.  I just love playing with my mom.  Sometimes I go get the toy she’s tossed, other times I make her go get it - well, SHE threw it way over there, she should have to go get it.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
After her work mom took me outside to potty and took some pictures of yours truly.  Unbeknownst to me mom also took some video.  Never mind the shaky camera - the mosquitos are really bad this year thanks to a very wet and late spring.  Good thing mom has ‘bug dope’ left over from when she lived in Alberta cause they attacked her and she had to spray herself down to stop ‘em.  A few got me too but mom gave me a chicken wiener treat and the itchiness magically disappeared (*coughbenadrylecough*)  I’m tellin’ ya - chicken wiener treats are MAGIC!
Tonight I get special peanut butter cookies in my supper, which in itself is a treat!  Mom bought me “President’s Choice brand Gourmet Dinner with turkey in savoury juices” as my birthday supper - now, before everyone goes all wonky over that, keep in mind she mixes it in with half my regular (healthy) kibble and it’s ONE DAY A YEAR:  MY BIRTHDAY!  So conveniently forgetting Miss Eleni’s instructions for one day isn’t the worst thing in the world.  Mom has medicine (Bleech!) if I need it, but hoping I won’t ‘cause ( you guessed it) Chicken Wieners work better!
Then we’re going for a nice long Let’s Go! As it’s a beautiful, warm summer evening and except for the mosquitos, I hope to visit all my doggy friends along the way and read my peemail.
Yup.  Life is rough, ain’t it?

Token video ... wait for it - he wants to kiss you!
Aww, lookit that, everyone gets a ConorKiss on his B'day *slurpslurp*
Mom's note:  Innernets troubles - post was saved yesterday but couldn't post.  Conor was spoiled rotten - he had a peanut butter and chicken muffin, with peanut butter as icing.  No wonder he was batting around something (bracelet or something like that I think) on the floor in the bedroom at 2 a.m.!!
