About Me

On September 1, 2010 my sweet little muppethead, KiraDog, died. She was diagnosed with Cushings disease in November 2009 and it finally gave way to heart disease and liver failure. I knew I needed another dog to fill the void in my heart and my home so I worked with Furbaby Rescue (where Kira came from) and was gently encouraged to meet a particular dog in need of a forever home. On September 10, 2010 I adopted Conor. . . . This is his story.

About Me (and really, when you think about it, it IS all about ME):

Conor: Gender: Masculine; Usage: Irish, English, Irish Mythology; Pronounced: KAHN-…ôr (English): Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Conchobhar which means "dog lover" or "wolf lover" also "lover of hounds". It has been in use in Ireland for centuries and was the name of several Irish kings.

Hi everyone!

My name is Conor. Well, it used to be Bumper but my mom thought it was as silly name (and in a way, so did I) for a grown-up puppy so she re-named me Conor. Conor, now that's a good strong manly-man Irish name, don't you think? I'm quite proud of it myself :-)

Anyway, I'm a "Liver" coloured Shih Tzu and I was about 2 1/2 years old when I was adopted (Mom says my Birthday is July 4, 2008! She's not 100% sure of the right date, but that's the day she picked). I have allergies and have to be careful (pfft!) about what I eat - no wheat, grains, or beef allowed. I'm a rambunctious guy who always seems to find trouble, er...toys, to play with. I like watching the world around me from my perch in the kitchen bay window and love my mom to bits - and even though he didn't really like me much, I also miss SirWillyCat a little.

Characters in my life:

  • Aunt Jo and Uncle Dale: Mom and Aunt Jo have been friends for almost 30 years, since high school. Aunt Jo is a pet person and raised both her kids to love animals. Uncle Dale, having grown up on a farm, had to be converted a little bit.
  • Aunt Diane: Mom's friend and (retired) co-worker. Aunt Diane lives a few doors away from us and we sometimes go to her place for a visit.
  • Miss Eleni: Founder of Furbaby Rescue
  • Miss Nicole: A Furbaby adopter who has two puppers to call her own. She lives in a different town, but close enough to mom they could visit (if their schedules ever let them!) Miss Nicole loves hearing my stories :-)
  • Miss Vanja: Met mom through Furbaby Rescue. They haven't met in person 'cause she lives far away.
  • VetLady: Dr. I. Elizabeth Borgmann, founder of the Whatcom Road Veterinary Clinic
  • Willy: (aka SirWillyCat): Adopted January 7, 1994. Willy died on January 24, 2011. He was 17 1/2 years old.

Mini Vacation and a Ferry ride!

Mom and I went to see Aunt Jo and Uncle Dale, along with cousins Anthony (human, 19 y/o), Katie (dog, 11 y/o), and Edo (cat, 8 y/o).  I've never met them before but Mom say she's known them for oodles of years, longer than I've been alive!!

We took the Big Ferry Boat over.  Now, I've been on the Ferry before and I liked it, but this time there was something different (I guess) and I didn't like at as much.  It was too loud, too busy with cars and people, and too stinky with all the fumes.  When the ferry started moving Mom tried to get me out of the car to walk and I said 'oh hell no!' and stayed put.

Nope, I'm fine right here on my car blankey!

Not sure why he was so scared, but when I went to walk him to the Pet Room, he refused to leave the car, trembling, etc.  Same on the way home.  Good thing he peed and pooped at the terminal before boarding!  So I filled his water bowl, left some treats, and away I went.

Jo and Dale recently moved to Comox over on Vancouver Island when Dale's job moved him out of Winnipeg.  I hear Winnipeg is crazy cold over the longer-than-here winters.  In fact, Aunt Jo barely stopped talking about how cold and long the winters are in Winnipeg.  She was only in Winnipeg for 4 years and we were visiting for 4 days.  Guess how those two numbers matched up?

That's OK, I won't complain about Aunt Jo going on (and on and on and on) about how awful Winnipeg was 'cause she fed me tiny bits of bones (Katie got the HUGE bits, I only got miniscule, barely visible crumbs).  Then when we weren't allowed bones any more, we got duck leather (basically the same as dried chicken strips, but made with duck).  Katie got the HUGE pieces, sometimes two pieces!  Whereas Yours Truly only got a teeniest microscopic pieces.

Just doesn't seem fair, now does it?

Except Mom reminds me KatieGirl is 110 lbs. of German Sheppard/Rottweiler?/something HUGE? cross.  Yet she is the gentlest giant you could ever meet.  Katie loves belly rubs, giving and getting kisses, and wrap-around hugs.  I gave her plenty of all three 'cause I missed her, too.
I'm "little" by comparison AND have food allergies.

So I sat with Aunt Jo the whole time and she pet me with her feet as I curled up on her ottoman...giving mom the stink-eye where she sat way on the other side of the couch.

Mom and Aunt Jo left me behind with Dale and Anthony a few times.  Us guys did Manly-Man chores and stuff while the women-folk were doing whatever secrecy women do when off having a coven of some kind.  Mom says the result of them taking off might become known next month; has something to do with why mom is selling our house back home...I think.  Ooo look, treats!@!!!  Gotta go :-)

Oh, almost forgot:  Edo the cat hates me.  I tried to be friends with him, but nope, hated me with a passion.  *sigh* I tried.

House sparkles!

The house is sparkly clean, boxes are packed and tucked away, and mom is hoping strangers come and look so they can buy my house from mom.  So far only one showing and one cancellation, but we're keeping our hopes up (mom has to remind me houses are 'shown' whereas bodies are 'viewed' so we have showings, not viewings).

If nothing else, I will be getting more walks 'cause mom says I can't stay in the house when folks are looking.  That worries me 'cause mom forgot to pack my toys and they're just sitting there out in the open as though free to a good home!

In other news, with all the heat of late my tummy's been a little upset and on the "Let's GO!" tonight I dribbled.  Yup, had me a butt bath when we gots home!!  *sigh*

Life is changing for mom and me.

We're moving and mom is looking for a completely different career.  She's had enough and is busting out of jail :-)

Details to follow at a later date.

High water and bugs.

LOTS of bugs.  Mosquito's, to be exact.  Hungry, bitey mosquito's.

Today mom and I went to the river park for our weekly hike.  The water levels were very high and mom took pictures to compare to when I was chasing geese last.

March 23 2013:  Sand bar/beachy area was about 40' from the grass to the water's edge.
Today:  Boulders were moved in to prevent folks from slipping into the current.  Today's pictures were taken with the cel. 'phone as the fancy-schmancy cameras' battery was dead.

After checking out the river levels we went for our usual hike.  About one-third of the way mom starting slapping herself...a lot!  Then all these blood smears appeared on her arms and legs.  We hoofed it hard, skipped our usual break and we high-tailed it as fast as my little legs could carry me to the trail break.  As we were going up to the road a family was going down.  After the polite salutations, mom said "oh, be warned, the mosquito's are Very Bad today!"  Not five minutes later the whole family was screaming their way back up the trail to walk on the upper road.  The one lady called out "thanks!"  When we got home the first thing mom did was put a can of bug dope in the car.  "Never again will I be without bug spray!!" She exclaimed adamantly.  Then she took an allergy pill to stop the itching (counts about 20 bites!!)

Oh, here's a video of the Mighty Fraser current.  This little video does not do it justice as it was Very Strong today.  Mom wouldn't let me even touch my paws in the water after the hike like she usually does to let me cool off, said my wee little self would tear the leash right out of mom's hands if the current caught me.  I don't wanna be a GonerConnor :-(

I'm so pretty...er, I meant Handsome!

My "Eau de Pooch", as mom likes to call my scent, was getting pretty strong so she took me to the Groomer on Saturday...but before all that, a story!  You know that kid from Peanuts who always has the dust cloud around him?  Pigpen?  Yeah.  Mom says that was me, except mine was "greasy and briney".  What does that mean, you ask?  Well, we go to Matsqui Regional Park at least every weekend that it's not raining.  There's a beach/sand bar area where kids build sand castles, other puppers run and play, and geese.  Let's not forget the geese.

The geese are HUGE!  And me, being the manly man that I am, well, I like to chase them.  They can swim in the current.  I can't.  So I'm not allowed to go into the river past my knees.  So much for being the man of the house :-(

Anyway, mom learned something new:  If you're on the EAST side of the bridge, you need a freshwater fishing license.  BUT, if you're on the WEST side of the bridge, you need a saltwater fishing license.  So the water in between is kinda oceany-kinda not, hence "briney".  I still go in up to my knees (it's too cold to go any deeper anyway, don't want to freeze my You-Know-What!) then I roll around on the beachy/sandy area.

So, briney water, sand bar, grassy park, then gravel trail.  In one day.  Oooohh, but I love how I smell afterwards!!!

These pictures were taken in March.  Mom called it "Conor's 'It's Bigger Than Me' Day" 'cause it seems everything and everyone I tried to play with was Bigger Than Me.  From the geese noted above to horses.  Yup, horses. I was so brave!  I let the big horses pass me and I only tried to trip them after they passed,  Mom held on to my leash very well, though and I couldn't get close enough.  I kept telling mom I only wanted to say hello!
Damn, I'm a good lookin' puppers, aren't I?

I'd say I'm back but I never really left :-)

So mom was thinking last night that she really should let me get back into writing this blog of mine.  Y'see, she's had a rough year and couldn't really think of upbeat and positive things to pass along.  Oh, I've cuddled and smothered her with kisses, but sometimes even Yours Truly didn't quite understand why she was having a rough year.

But anyway, the worst is over and now the clean-up begins...

On to happier news!!  MEEEEEEEE !!!!  :-)

This picture was taken at the river park; we go there every weekend when it's sunny.  Our hikes are around 2.5-3 km round trip, depending on which side trail we take.  Y'see, the main trail has at least three side trails that take us back up to the dyke road; off-shoots, if you will.  We used to go to the second one for a 5.5 km round trip (the third is almost 8km) but mom said she's getting lazy and we take the first off-trail now.  BUT, in our defense, we do go almost every weekend, as opposed to only 3-4 times a year!

Mom has been on this safety kick of late - bought me a snappy new collar cover thingy in Lime Green with a reflective band.  It's basically a 2" wide elastic band with a small tension slide that slips over my head when we go for The Walk.  Mom said I pretty much blend in with the gravel and the road (when it's dry) so this way cars and stuff might see me better and stop.

OH!  Mom said her BFF is moving back to BC and I might get to meet Katie, their Sheppard/pitbull/mastif (I think?) cross soon.  Katie is 11 years old so I'm s'posed to calm and gentle when I meet her.  Gentle I can handle ("Gentle-MAN" that I am!) but I'm not sure about the calm thing.  I just get sooo excited meeting new people and going new places and (ohmygod!) We get to go on da big Ferry Boat to see 'em!

Random ConorPics:

Some of the overnight destruction I create while mom sleeps.  She figured out how I was getting to the top shelf of the bookcase and the dining room table.  She has now foiled my nefarious activities with various forms of blockage.
At Da Park after The Walk.  There is a bowl of water for me about a foot away.

(Oh, my little ConorMan is So Brave!!!  He went underneath the HUGE, loud ~moving~ train!!!!)
