About Me

On September 1, 2010 my sweet little muppethead, KiraDog, died. She was diagnosed with Cushings disease in November 2009 and it finally gave way to heart disease and liver failure. I knew I needed another dog to fill the void in my heart and my home so I worked with Furbaby Rescue (where Kira came from) and was gently encouraged to meet a particular dog in need of a forever home. On September 10, 2010 I adopted Conor. . . . This is his story.

About Me (and really, when you think about it, it IS all about ME):

Conor: Gender: Masculine; Usage: Irish, English, Irish Mythology; Pronounced: KAHN-…ôr (English): Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Conchobhar which means "dog lover" or "wolf lover" also "lover of hounds". It has been in use in Ireland for centuries and was the name of several Irish kings.

Hi everyone!

My name is Conor. Well, it used to be Bumper but my mom thought it was as silly name (and in a way, so did I) for a grown-up puppy so she re-named me Conor. Conor, now that's a good strong manly-man Irish name, don't you think? I'm quite proud of it myself :-)

Anyway, I'm a "Liver" coloured Shih Tzu and I was about 2 1/2 years old when I was adopted (Mom says my Birthday is July 4, 2008! She's not 100% sure of the right date, but that's the day she picked). I have allergies and have to be careful (pfft!) about what I eat - no wheat, grains, or beef allowed. I'm a rambunctious guy who always seems to find trouble, er...toys, to play with. I like watching the world around me from my perch in the kitchen bay window and love my mom to bits - and even though he didn't really like me much, I also miss SirWillyCat a little.

Characters in my life:

  • Aunt Jo and Uncle Dale: Mom and Aunt Jo have been friends for almost 30 years, since high school. Aunt Jo is a pet person and raised both her kids to love animals. Uncle Dale, having grown up on a farm, had to be converted a little bit.
  • Aunt Diane: Mom's friend and (retired) co-worker. Aunt Diane lives a few doors away from us and we sometimes go to her place for a visit.
  • Miss Eleni: Founder of Furbaby Rescue
  • Miss Nicole: A Furbaby adopter who has two puppers to call her own. She lives in a different town, but close enough to mom they could visit (if their schedules ever let them!) Miss Nicole loves hearing my stories :-)
  • Miss Vanja: Met mom through Furbaby Rescue. They haven't met in person 'cause she lives far away.
  • VetLady: Dr. I. Elizabeth Borgmann, founder of the Whatcom Road Veterinary Clinic
  • Willy: (aka SirWillyCat): Adopted January 7, 1994. Willy died on January 24, 2011. He was 17 1/2 years old.

On the move again!

So it's been a crazy 20 months!

We moved into this really great basement suite, private (gravel) fenced in yard, 4 blocks from a major city park in February 2015.  The first set of neighbours upstairs were not very friendly and didn't like me much.  Could be because they had to move 'cause they snuck in an extra puppy at Christmas and the new puppy and their older dog didn't get along.  They blamed me for barking a lot but it was actually their dogs who started it.  The landlord caught them lying about me when he came around and listened to their dogs going at and me only chiming in once in a while.  They moved in April.

The next lady and her son were really cool and I loved (simply LOVED) their corgi, Gin-Ji.  Mom really liked the lady too, she was so nice and fun to have as a neighbour.  Alas, the lady and the landlord didn't quite see eye-to-eye and then her sons moved in with their girlfriends so it was pretty cramped for them.  She moved away and took Gin-Ji with her.  I miss Gin-Ji and mom misses the lady :-(

Then a new lady moved in in January 2016 with her really old dog, Oreo.  Oreo was half-blind and arthritic (mom says that means he can't walk very well, poor poor guy :-( ) but the lady was super cool!  Then something really bad happened to the lady and she died.  Mom says it upsets her still because she found her.  Mom let Oreo stay with us for few days until a family member could take him.  Oreo was ok, though we really didn't do much together.

Finally, the landlord let a friend move in, in April, and he turned out to be an angry alcoholic.  Mom says that means he drinks bad stuff and gets mean.  He yells a lot and gets violent; finally mom had enough and in August she yelled back.  He raged on the shared parking lot and wanted to hurt my mom but before I could intervene, mom went chest-to-chest with his drunk self and backed his ass right into his truck.  Mom called the police and the landlord but was still not happy with the outcome.  So she thought about looking for a new place to live.

Then the landlords decided they'd had enough of being landlords and are making "lipstick renovations" hoping to sell the house.  Mom says there is too much uncertainty so she decided enough was enough and started looking for a place for us to live.

This week she found one.  It's not perfect, though.  No fenced in yard for me to play in, because the property isn't landscaped yet.  It's a brand-new house just built this year and the apartment is "purpose built" so it's not an add-on/renovation but part of the original house design.  It costs a wee bit more (only $150 more than now) but all utilities included, it's brand new, new appliances, etc. and mom will be the first ever tenant in the suite.  She wants me to make sure everyone knows it has NINE FOOT CEILINGS!!!!  2 bedrooms, tiny (Tiny!!) living room, kitchen, washer/dryer, soaker tub, walk in closet...and NINE FOOT CEILINGS!!!!!  And the next very best part of it all?  Only 2.1 km to work (about 1.3 miles).  Mom said she can walk to work.  I don't like this part.  Mom always takes ME walking with her, now she wants to go by herself?  I don't think she's ready for that yet!

The landlord said mom has to go to the house on Wednesday to sign paperwork.  I get to meet the new landlord then.  To make sure I make a Very Good Impression, mom took me to the ManSpa (groomer) today for a mani-pedi, bath, and new 'do.

Mom says the owners live in the main part of the home and are older (mid-50's-early 60's) so they're quieter.  The house is also far away from the raceway and trains so mom is hoping it will be quieter (especially on weekends) for her, too.

I will try to let everyone know how it goes!

Oh, I'm doing great, by the way - just had my annual physical and VetLady says I'm healthy (then why on Earth did she give me needles???) although I have a few 'age warts' forming which means this ride is about half over.  Mom got teary-eyed 'cause she loves me so much she never wants to think about it but I reminded her I need to take care of Kira and SirWillyCat when I go so she should be happy for that!  Anyway, that's at least 8 years away so we won't think about it at all!!
